I moved to Slad in 2010 with my wife Sally. Working in special education for over thirty years I have been dedicated to promoting improved education for disabled children. As head teacher for over twenty five years I have been privileged to see substantial progress across this sector. During my working life I have also worked for Birmingham University, the University of the West of England and the WEA in developing courses to support inclusion and specialisms in understanding autism. I have always included lecturing and tutoring alongside being a headteacher.
Sally and I have four, now adult children living across the south west, three of which live in Bristol. My wife still teaches in Bristol commuting daily and I retired in 2013. We attend Stroud Christian Fellowship where I support Christians Against Poverty and our local Trinity Slad.
Arriving in the area in 2010 I became aware of local issues relating to housing, planning and business and was approached to join the parish council. Co-opted in 2013 I have been working with Painswick Parish council since.
As Ward Councillor I enjoy working across the area to lead and encourage community events, share communication, and to improve road and community safety.
There is now a trained Slad Traffic Awareness Group monitoring the B4070, a defibrillator located at the Woolpack pub, annual Ward meetings, annual church Nativity, Remembrance Day service at Slad Trinity church. Community events have been many and varied and as Chair Person of the Slad Sociey , for two years,I have been involved in organising festivals celebrating Laurie Lee, Royal birthdays and weddings, all of which have been very successful helping people to get to know each other and introducing new people to local life!
Taking part in regular meetings and training, I continue to develop skills and knowledge about our local area, how it works and relates to other tiers of local government.
As Ward Councillor I serve on various committees and represent the council on other bodies, currently I serve as representative on the Gyde Almhouses Charity and Swift's Hill Nature Reserve.
