Painswick Feast

Painswick Feast

The Clypping ceremony will once again be at the heart of the annual Feast celebrations on Sunday 22nd September. 'Clyppan' is an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning to embrace or to clasp (nothing to do with trimming the yew trees then!). Everyone is encouraged to hold hands 🀝 and encircle St Mary's church while the Clypping hymn is sung, to express gratitude for the church.

Children are invited to make their own flower garlands at the Feast to wear for the procession ahead of the ceremony at 3pm. Along with guest speaker Archdeacon Hilary Deacon, as is tradition they will then be presented with a Clypping bun and a 50 pence piece 🌸🌼🌸

The photos show the Clypping in recent years and in years gone by: 1906 (from the Howard Beard collection), and a mystery year - can anyone help?
